by Mary Balogh, Nicola Cornick, Courtney Milan
The Heart of Christmas is a trio of holiday books by three different authors. A Handful Of Gold by Mary Balogh is a fast paced read. Ms Balogh has gifted us with a story that embraces the holiday season. Julian and Blanche's story is full of drama, humor, spice and Christmas spirit. The character...
7 January, 2017It's a snowday, which is only a delight on schooldays, not on weekends, which are properly devoted to doing a vast number of things. Not me, I'm perfectly happy to spend a day reading and napping with cats. But for two highschool students who have active social and extracurricular liv...
3stars for the novella by Courtney Milan.
Rating for the Milan; haven't read the other two.Lydia's family runs a bookshop. She has a crush on a customer to whom she's never spoken. When the family is in desperate straits, William offers to pay Lydia enough for sex to rescue the family's livelihood. He thinks repeatedly to himself that he...
Only read the Courtney Milan story - which I would rate a solid 4 stars, but don't really feel I can rate the whole book that high, as glancing over the other stories, I found little to interest me.
My review contains spoilers and they're mostly my thoughts as I went with the book...Note: this review and rating is solely based on Courtney Milan’s novella, “This Wicked Gift” (4.5), which is a part of her Carhart series.“This Wicked Gift”, Courtney MilanI mean wow wow wow! Such a wonderful novell...
I only read "This Wicked Gift" because I wanted to read about poor people. I really liked it; it was like a Regency version of The Jeffersons.
My review is only for the Mary Balogh story. This story had two things which were unappealing to me: an annoying busybody heroine and a hero with no detectable redeeming qualities. And the "big misunderstanding" which Balogh usually handles so well was just silly here.
I don't have much to say about the first two stories, except that they were good. Both the Balogh story and the Cornick stories are reformed rake stories (it's fairly clear if you read my reviews that rakes are not my favorite types of heroes by far). I felt that the metamorphosis of Ms. Balogh's ...
A Handful of Gold - 2 starsBoring, generic story of the jaded rake transformed by the surprisingly virtuous opera dancer. Balogh skimped on characterization and emotion, instead playing tropes and archetypes like playing cards. The Season for Suitors - 3 starsEntirely forgettable story, but told well...
