Wally Lamb fans have been waiting and waiting for this novel, which was originally slated to appear in 2004. The Hour I First Believed is nothing if not ambitious. It begins with the intense trauma of the 1999 Columbine High School massacre and darts back into historic events and perplexes equally jolting. Lamb's focus, though, isn't on random terror; it's on the effects of experiences on the human spirit. The author of She's Come Undone and I Know This Much Is True tenders such attention on his characters that they never seem like puppets in a storm, no matter how grave the circumstances. A sensitive literary read.

5.0 The Hour I First Believed
If Nineteen Minutes had been written by a man, it would be this book. The story was hypnotic, the writing eloquent, and the story was the tragic tale of the Columbine shootings that we know all too well. Another goosebump-inducing masterpiece by Wally Lamb. I just wish he would publish more books...

2.0 The Hour I First Believed
The book is not without merit, and there's no question that Wally Lamb is a gifted writer. There were parts of the story that had me riveted, and that dealt with important contemporary issues. When Lamb stays focused, the effect can be mesmerizing. The big flaw, in my opinion, is that this is two ...
