This book started off so promising--it was creepy in a science fictiony 1900 kind of way. And then it got weird. Not science fiction weird. More like Carl Sagan narrating a tour of the universe as imagined by some guy in 1900. For chapters and chapters and chapters. And then it goes back to part one,...

Two visitors to the West of Ireland, Tonnison and Berreggnog, stumble across a ruined house. They discover a damaged book in the midst of the debris. It is the diary of the reclusive former occupant of the house. In it, he recounts a series of bizarre phenomena he encounters while living there. Th...

The similarities of this novel with the atmosphere and the writing style of Lovecraft's stories were palpable. However, in Hodgson's work, the horror was more realistic and quite intense.

This 1908 was recommended in the A Reader's Guide to Fantasy on the "Seven-League Shelf" list of the cream of the fantasy genre. It's even on the "1001 Books to Read Before You Die" list of significant literary fiction. So, definitely a book that has classic status, and if you believe the Wiki, a "m...

I am not sure exactly what I think of this one. It was just ok for me. Parts of it were very good. Other parts got a bit too Sci-Fi and I got lost and was not sure what was going on. I had to go back and re-read several parts to make sure that I didn't miss something (I didn't...it was just confusin...

I have to admit that I'm a sucker for weird, creepy fiction. I had high hopes for this book. It started off giving me everything I was looking for: ancient manuscripts, mysterious old ruins, a vast evil old house, a sub-terrain adventure, but then it lost me. About 25% of the book involved the unna...

My favorite William Hope Hodgson novel. Really creepy even after so many years. The fact that you never really know what is going on makes it even creepier.
