A Scottish-Canadian Blethering On About Books
I don't think I've ever read any Tom Clancy, though I've certainly been aware of him through other media, such as the film based on this particular book. In Clancy you're not going to get an elegant prose style or characters with any depth. I know that. My dad took a copy of this book into the USSR during the mid-1980s. It was confiscated as anti-Soviet propaganda.

I tried to get through this book several times. I just found it to be too boring. I never was successful in making it through.

My first Clancy and still the best. It reads very nicely even now, without the Cold War background. It is so believable and realistic, it seemed to be non-fiction.

I know I really should not have liked this book. The writing is pedestrian, not much characterization, a fanciful plot, but damn, it's a page-turner and great story.

Everyone always goes on about how meticulous Tom Clancy's background research is, but there was a moment in this book which made me wonder. They're going to run a big program on a military computer, and (being gamblin' military men) they decide to bet on how long it will take to complete. One of the...
