Fatbrain Review To understand the elegant simplicity and tour-de-force of Volume 2, we must begin with TCP/IP Illustrated Volume 1 : The Protocols. Many publications describe the layers, RFCs, and protocols of the Internet. Volume 1 uses the 'tcpdump' program as a vehicle to explain, watch and understand the entire TCP/IP protocol suite, not how TCP/IP theoretically should work, but how it actually performs. The author forces conditions to occur, displays the results, presents, explains and analyzes the structure and function of TCP/IP from the link to the application layers. Volume 2 continues along the same lines by explaining, describing and analyzing the source code for the kernel implementation of the "4.4 BSD-Lite release" of TCP/IP, approximately 20K lines of code, give or take a few hundred. The source code is presented in a code-block function format with data structures. Each block of code is followed by an explanation, analysis and description of the function. Interestingly, the few remaining bugs (implementation challenges, to be politically correct) are also discussed and analyzed. Explanations are cross-referenced with forward and backward pointers. Coverage of the protocols in Volume 1 and of the BSD-Lite TCP/IP implementation in Volume 2 is comprehensive and up to date. Both volumes are excellent texts, tutorials and guides. Both are recommended. Additional information and reviews on 4.4 BSD publications and on the 4.4 BSD-Lite CD companion are in our Fall 1994 New Book Bulletin. The SVR4 AT&T TLI counterpart for Volume 2 (although obviously without source code) is Internetworking with TCP/IP Volume III : Client-Servier Programming andApplications (AT&T TLI Version), Comer/Stevens.
