1785 … the beginning of a turbulent new age of iron, coal and steam.
Spanning almost thirty years, the saga of the Howarths of Garth is the story of those epic times.
It is now the children of Dorcas and Ned who dominate the Howarth story as they negotiate their adult lives as their parents did before them.
Charlotte, stubborn in love, follows her heart as she weds a radical in London. Having cut herself off from her family she stoically bears the consequences as her husband turns out to be as bold and risk-taking in their family life as in writing.
William has his eyes firmly fixed on the prospect of fortune as he takes advantage of the new age of iron and the prosperity it can bring. However, as he grows into a successful man a pride grows in him that threatens to rob him of what he truly holds most dear.
Whilst Dick inherits Ned’s living and has his future laid out for him as he works the soil and lives at the complete mercy of the seasons.
Dorcas and Ned watch the paths their children have taken and see their legacy moulded before their eyes.
‘The Iron Master’ is a gripping historical saga set at the turn of the Industrial Revolution.
