A truly excellent read, but not the book I was expecting. I chose this book as my first bingo book because I was looking for something that would trip along at a fast clip, and typically Mary Stewart and the romantic suspense genre of her time generally do clip along as a good pace. But The Ivy T...
The Ivy Tree was published seven years into Mary Stewart’s career, in 1961, and in some ways it’s one of her strongest books. (Also one of my favorites.) It’s set in Northumberland, and weaves together some of the strands that Stewart returned to frequently. It’s an interesting one to reread, becaus...
Finished! Well, I'll be hornswoggled. This book was really rather fabulous, actually. The beginning is a bit slow, but the plot twists come fast and furious in the last half. It's set in Northumbria, near Newcastle, which makes a nice change from Cornwall, and the Roman ruins figure in th...
3.5 stars. Another good mystery/romantic suspense story by Mary Stewart; The Ivy Tree wasn't my favorite, but was still good. The secret about Mary was an interesting twist, but I'm not sure how plausible the whole premise was. Sometimes I feel like Stewart's books verge on insta-love, but not this ...
This novel had me guessing the entire time! The best part was there were no hokey tricks, last minute third parties. But lots of irony. I very much enjoyed the suspense. Thanks, Jeanette for recommending it!
Wow what an ending! The twists and turns kept coming and every other chapter I changed my mind. Was she or wasn't she Annabel? I'm not saying.....but it was sure fun finding out!

After mostly liking Nine Coaches Waiting, I decided to try another Mary Stewart. This is another mystery. It’s not nearly as atmospheric and I had figured out the central twist long before it was actually revealed. However, the characters were interesting and the beautiful descriptions of Northumber...
Read by Jane Asher and ripped from a dodgy cassette."I might of been alone in a painted landscape..."Thus starts this story of 'con'nivance and intrigue with a plot twist that was not so hard to spot before hand. Enjoyable but not riveting and worth a solid three stars.'Con' definitions:The act or p...
It seems to me that every Stewart story should have been filmed by Hitchcock. Why weren't they?Anyway, a perfect story set near Hadrian's wall, with old estates, family conflict over inheritance, a little mystery, a lot of suspense, and some accurate and engaging scenery.I suppose the Barbara Vine b...
