The Long War by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter follows the adventures and travails of heroes Joshua Valiente and Lobsang in an exciting continuation of the extraordinary science fiction journey begun in their New York Times bestseller The Long Earth. A generation after the events of The Long Earth, humankind has spread across the new worlds opened up by 'stepping.' A new 'America Valhalla'is emerging more than a million steps from Datum'our Earth. Thanks to a bountiful environment, the Valhallan society mirrors the core values and behaviors of colonial America. And Valhalla is growing restless under the controlling long arm of the Datum government. Soon Joshua, now a married man, is summoned by Lobsang to deal with a building crisis that threatens to plunge the Long Earth into a war unlike any humankind has waged before., War has come to the Long Earth....

Humankind has spread across the new worlds opened up by stepping, which Joshua and Lobsang explored a mere decade ago. Now 'civilization' flourishes, and fleets of airships link the multiple Earths through exploration, trade, and culture.

Humankind is shaping the Long Earth, but in turn the Long Earth is shaping humankind. A new America that has christened itself 'Valhalla' has emerged more than a million steps from the original Datum Earth. And like the American revolutionaries of old, the Valhallans resent being controlled from afar by the Datum government.

In the intervening years, the song of the trolls-graceful, hive-mind humanoids-has suffused the Long Earth. But in the face of humankind's inexorable advance, they are beginning to fall silent . . . and gradually disappear.

Joshua, now married and a father, is summoned by Lobsang. It seems that he alone can confront the perfect storm of crises that threatens to plunge all of the Long Earth into war.

A war unlike any that has been waged before...

2.5 The Long War - Terry Pratchett, Stephen Baxter
Okay, mostly it's just a mind-tour through infinite possible worlds. And that's fine. There's also a bit of Star Trek: The Next Generation-like advising in a supremely wise manner. And I like that, too. There isn't a war, which I probably prefer to skip, although it does make the title misleading. T...

3.0 The Long War
Hmmm, two books in and I’m still kind of unsure how much I actually like this series...Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love the underlying concept of a chain of (apparently) countless Earths (known collectively as ‘The Long Earth’), of which our own is merely a single link, each existing in its own...

Terry Pratchett loves cat but I'm not sure how he feels about dogs considering the dogs in this book. But that's okay, he loves cats. His cat apparently tried to eat hamsters once. The Cat is not grooming the hamster in the pic, but taste testing For the record, I love Pratchett's work, and...

4.0 The Long War - Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter
The Long War is the sequel to Pratchett and Baxter's earlier novel, The Long Earth, which asked the question: what if humanity suddenly had access to a billion Earths, all subtly different variations on the original?I was kind of expecting The Long War to be a sort of hate letter to humanity, from t...

For the record, I love Pratchett's work, and the three books I read by [a:Stephen Baxter|20295|Stephen Baxter|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/authors/1223817214p2/20295.jpg] I enjoyed. I was thrilled they were working together. It should be noted, however, that I am a reader, not a fan as Pra...
