I think this was the least of all the James Herriot books, but was still enjoyable in its own right. There was no doubt he knew how to tell a story in a wonderfully engaging manner.
I agree with many others who say that out of the series, this is the weakest, but still an enjoyable read for big fans, like myself.
I don't know the secret that makes these stories so beguiling, but I dearly loved them.
