Odd but clever, this story made me feel a lot of things as I read it: sadness, innocence, happiness, and a lot in between. The illustrations are, if possible, even better than The Red Tree. I love how Tan puts images on top of images, creating a scrap-book feel. There is a lot going on and yet it is...
I really dig Tan's illustrations. His prose in this fell just a bit flat for me, but it hardly matters as there is just so much to look at. Odd and quirky beings peer out of every corner. This would be delightful to read with a young, sharp-eyed person on one's lap.
