The benefits of vitamin D3
The health benefits of vitamin D3 may vary depending research. However, some studies show that vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is needed to maintain bone density and maintaining the body's immunity against cancers, heart disease, diabetes, weakness, loss of muscle mass and osteoporosis, among other disorders. Vitamin D3, as all changes in the family of vitamin D is actually a hormone produced naturally in the body. Although very few foods contain vitamin D3, you can be obtained easily through absorption of sunlight.
Importance
Vitamin D3 plays an important role in brain development and a 2008 study on increasing rates of autism in children of Somalia indicate a possible relation to maternal deficiency of vitamin D3. As a steroid hormone, vitamin D3 has an important role in the emotional development and gross motor coordination (see Resources).
Types
Most people receive a plentiful supply of vitamin D3 from the sun, but because of increased awareness of skin cancer from sun exposure, those who avoid the sun or a strong apply sunscreen may suffer a deficiency of vitamin D3. Few foods provide an adequate amount of vitamin D3, but fish, cod liver oil and eggs provide small amounts of this hormone. Fortunately, supplements offer an alternative way to increase levels of vitamin D3 in the body (see Resources).
Effects of vitamin D3 deficiencies
Vitamin D3 aids absorption of calcium which is required for bone density. The supplemental dose of vitamin can reduce the severity of osteoporosis and hypertension in the elderly who do not receive adequate sun exposure. Other conditions of bone density, such as rickets are evident in malnourished children, resulting in deformation of the skeleton. These children are often poverty-stricken countries where their malnourished mothers breastfeed.
Misconceptions about health benefits of vitamin D3
The risk of taking too much supplemental vitamin D3 is very low. In fact, a person would have to consume large amounts of vitamin D3, over a period of weeks, before reaching a toxic level. Dr. R.Vieth published a comprehensive review of the level of toxicity of vitamin D3 in 1999 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, easing unfounded fears about the low level of toxicity.
