These are well written, intelligent, entertaining mysteries with a style that feels remarkably authentic to the original Sherlock books and a strong yet completely un-preachy feminist bent. But... I think after four of them, I need to take a break and read something else in between. Not all fiction ...

In this, the fourth book about Mary Russell and her relationship with Sherlock Holmes, the main character is neither Mary nor Sherlock but the louring presence of Dartmoor, which clings to this novel like fog on wool. Lauries R, King's prose is vivid and memorable helping me to experience the deso...

Those damned Baskervilles and their spectral dogs and crimes Lose to Holmes. Again. Any thing that riffs on The Hound of the Baskervilles, with Mary Russell, gets five stars from me.

So far, this book is my favorite in terms of setting and atmosphere. Dartmoor, tors, bogs, rain; how much more atmospheric can you get? Well, I guess you could add a castle, but The Moor doesn't suffer from the lack. The Moor is Ms. King's homage to The Hound of the Baskervilles and it's done re...

Mary Russell is reluctantly dragged away from her studies after receiving a telegram from Holmes requesting her presence in Dartmoor. Holmes had been in Dartmoor visiting an old friend, but got drawn into an investigation after a local is killed. The case in question involves a ghostly carriage made...

This is absolutely my most favorite series ever! Every book in the series is fantastic-5 star! If you like Sherlock Holmes, you have to read this pastiche. King's is the best one I've read yet.

I'm a big fan of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and Laurie R. King's Mary Russell books that give Holmes a female counterpart and partner. I loved the first three books in King's series, The Beekeeper's Apprentice, A Monstrous Regiment of Woman and A Letter of Mary. I was particularly excited ...

Perhaps a little weaker in imagination and general themes than the previous three books, but it held a certain charm for me - including those interminable ramblings across the moor. I could have wished for a little more Holmes, once again, because I do like the moments of him and Russell working tog...

Not my favorite in this series. It's always good to spend time with Mary Russell and Holmes but this one meanders a bit too much along the moor. Nice atmosphere but I found my attention drifting a bit.
