Five prisoners of war from the American Civil war find themselves stranded in their escape after hijacking a hot air balloon. While exploring the mysterious "Lincoln" island they find themselves on, an unknown force seems to guide and assist them in their quest of surviving and starting a new life. A majestically written sequel to Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea produced by renowned science fiction writer, Jules Verne, Mysterious Island (or L'isle Misterieuse, as it is known in the author's native language) is a story of adventure, mystery and remarkable determination in which the heroes involved face numerous challenges, showing their resilience in overcoming them till the very end. Thrill and excitement is constantly accompanies by danger and possibility for new discoveries and adventures throughout the novel. As usual, Verne's engaging, familiar and incredibly smooth writing style is able to keep the entire storyline together with remarkable ease, influencing us step by step to see deeper into gradually unfolding mysteries and reflect on the sometimes complex and unexpected personalities of the various characters. The book's true value, of course, comes from its ability to literally transport its readers into the story through genuine, realistically depicted events that will not only keep them at the edge of their seat, but also make them feel like they are truly a part of the story, discovering the hidden mysteries of the island and being guided through all of the dangers by Captain Nemo, whose appearance and revealing of his true identity will shine a new light over the entire story. Mysterious Island is a timeless tale that has sparked the imagination and curiosity of numerous readers throughout the past two centuries.

This was a very entertaining adventure novel, even if Verne's castaways were implausibly gifted with just the right skills and knowledge necessary to survive.
