A light and intense mystery poetry by an American poet, novelist, and dramatist, Paul Laurence Dunbar, who was the first established African-American poet internationally. His interest in writing stories and poetry started at an early age and at 16 he made a first publication of his works in Dayton newspaper in Ohio. The Mystery defines the poet's deep and lowly emotions that conveys sadness, regret, fear, uncertainty, and self-pity. He is unsure of his actions, whether they are acceptable or not. He fears that people might not appreciate what he does though he cannot cheer anyone. The poet mentioned about some power, or lacking power, that it says no. Might be implying that the poet has done something wrong. Defining the poet as the subject to this poem. It seems like he is depressed and hopeless, he thinks that he has no direction to lead him into becoming a better man. Lacking energy and drive for his life, needing someone to guide him and take him to the right path. for he has encountered difficulty and hardships brought by life. He wants freedom and confidence to face all these trials and burdens. He needs help and comfort from someone who will be always there when he needs. Friends are not there to support him. He needs someone to talk to and confide in his problems. He then thinks of the Man in the heavens. Thinking He will surely lend a hand to him and He will direct him to the goodness of life. He will then be absolved of his ill and desperate feelings. He will see a light so bright and shining beyond the darkness of his shadows. There will be no more negative thoughts and feelings and he will be gratified with his love.
