by Sarah Waters
This was my first novel by Waters, and it won’t be my last. Waters' writing immerses you into the time where the novel is set, her attention to detail draws you into the story in a way that only a skillful writer can. I loved the character development of this book, and I enjoyed reflecting upon how ...
Rating: 4/5 Summary: Helen, Viv, Duncan, and Kay survive through the horrors of London torn apart by World War II as their lives connect and diverge. (You’d think there was more to the plot but no, not really).Review: Overall, I enjoyed this book. It was built with an interesting structure where the...
I think "Tipping the Velvet" spoiled Waters' follow-up work for me. Or perhaps it's that Waters captures the Victorian era the best, because "Fingersmith" was fantastic, too. (I generally review books on how well I like the story, which is not necessarily the same thing as whether the writing is goo...

The one I like most is probably Vivien, though she's rather a door matt. The backward timeline does rather...

Unlike her others (Fingersmith, Tipping the Velvet, Affinity) which take place in the Victorian era, this one takes place in WWII era London. The novel follows the lives o...
This was an amazing novel. Waters creates a series of wonderfully intricate characters that almost move backwards in time to tell us the whole story. Waters is a very talented writer who shines at setting a haunting atmosphere.
This is a story of the London Blitz that no-one has told before. The characters - female firefighters, prison warders, conscientious objectors, Christian Scientists - are bound together in a plot that unravels in reverse chronological order to create a moving story of war beyond the trenches. I was ...
