I read Le Guin's fifth Earthsea novel when it first came out a decade ago, and loved it. I enjoyed some aspects of this novel but compared to the other books in the cycle, it is disappointing.
The last book of the 'Earthsea Chronicles'. The ending chapter was the shortest, but all the loose ends were so impeccably tied up that the the conclusion was not rushed or abrupt, as can only be executed by a master storyteller. After my [ex-]husband got me into the Earthsea Cycle novels by Ursula LeGuin, I was quick to order the three books added after he'd read the books. I delayed reading The Other Wind after I lost the fourth book in the series, Tehanu, but finally gave in to the lure of finding out what had happened to...
How many months overdue is this review? The Other Wind is the beautiful sunset story that fans of Earthsea were hoping for when they got Tehanu instead. Here we see the characters happy in their old age, having one last adventure, rather than being miserable and abused. It is basically what the last Indiana Jones sequel tried to be but ...
The first Earthsea novel in lo, these many years. Lovely. Filled me with a deep satisfaction. (June 2008)
