“A beautiful portrait of being in Paris in the glittering 1920s—as a wife and as one’s own woman.”—Entertainment Weekly   A deeply evocative story of ambition and betrayal, The Paris Wife captures the love affair between two unforgettable people: Ernest Hemingway and his wife Hadley.   Chicago, 1920: Hadley Richardson is a quiet twenty-eight-year-old who has all but given up on love and happiness—until she meets Ernest Hemingway. Following a whirlwind courtship and wedding, the pair set sail for Paris, where they become the golden couple in a lively and volatile group—the fabled “Lost Generation”—that includes Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, and F. Scott Fitzgerald.   Though deeply in love, the Hemingways are ill prepared for the hard-drinking, fast-living, and free-loving life of Jazz Age Paris. As Ernest struggles to find the voice that will earn him a place in history and pours himself into the novel that will become The Sun Also Rises, Hadley strives to hold on to her sense of self as her roles as wife, friend, and muse become more challenging. Eventually they find themselves facing the ultimate crisis of their marriage—a deception that will lead to the unraveling of everything they’ve fought so hard for.   A heartbreaking portrayal of love and torn loyalty, The Paris Wife is all the more poignant because we know that, in the end, Hemingway wrote that he would rather have died than fallen in love with anyone but Hadley.   NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER   WINNER—BEST HISTORICAL FICTION—GOODREADS CHOICE AWARDS   NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY People • Chicago Tribune • NPR • The Philadelphia Inquirer • Kirkus Reviews • The Toronto Sun • BookPage   Look for special features inside. While I've never read a Hemingway book, I've always heard that he drank a lot and could be a hard man to get along with. I have seen his house in Key West and saw some of the bars he supposedly hung out in. I was rather taken back in the size of his house there. However, after reading this book, it ...

2.0 Book club read and I ended up playing hookie
I really should have DNF'd this book. Putting aside my personal feelings and value judgments I have for Ernest Hemingway, the tone didn't come across as I would have expected. I really knew nothing of his (first) wife, but I would have expected EH to come across more broody and a mean drunk. Instead...

This book took me longer to read than I wanted it to. While I enjoyed it while reading it, the story dragged on with day to day minutiae that it often became hard to tell time lines. In fact, so much was told of the day to day that I was surprised to find out in the end that they'd only been mar...

Maybe I should have read more reviews or at least the Wikipedia entry for Ernest Hemingway before reading this. I admit that I knew little about him going into this, but I suppose that made it suspenseful at least, whereas I would have known that I'd find this story disturbing if I'd known what was ...

I've always thought to live a life like Ernest Hemingway would be a dream. Living a life full of adventure with a carefree attitude, writing a book about it and having it published would be quite like heaven. In A Paris Wife, a fictional account of Hemingway's first wife Hadley Richardson we learn ...
