Short and silly. An enjoyable read.

This has been labelled as an adult book in the public library but I suspect it's more young teens (YA) because while it was mildly amusing as a read for me, I don't get the wry humour. I might be just out of the target reader market.

Two weeks ago, I went to my nearest cinema to watch The Pirates! In An Adventure with Scientists. It was a fun little film, and it's classic Aardman entertainment, but it's nothing great. It is quite funny, and also rather sexist. The flyleaf mentions that Defoe wrote the book to try to win over a woman, who spurned him. A minor strain of bitter sexism runs through the book, which is otherwise a fun romp. I'm disappointed, as it would otherwise be a stellar recommendation. Not for ...

It's Pirates! in an Adventure! with Scientists! Of course I love it. Although I suppose I'm lucky he didn't throw the word "plague" in there as well, lest I spontaneously combust in joy.Or Penguins. Or Zombies. Really, I have lots of nouns I could recommend, should Defoe need new ideas.
