Robert V.S.

The Good:Love how this book started -- right away, the reader is informed through a "special notice" that the great ship has vanished at sea, along with the 800 souls she was carrying. (Souls...the choice of that word in the report had a chilling effect on me). Immediately, you're drawn into this my...

I first noticed The Red Wolf Conspiracy on Top 25 Best Fantasy Books and immediately added it to my tbr. Sadly, it stayed there forgotten until I spotted review copy on Netgalley and remembered all the praise about it. So, with renewed interested, I sailed into an epic adventure. To be honest, the...

But what you haven’t read, and what you rarely encounter, are other worlds that are created as masterfully, characte...

Just as goood the second time around. It's easy to appreciate the time and detail Redick spent crafting his world and plot. Can't wait to get to the second book!

All in all pretty enjoyable. Surprised I had never heard of it before, and the (several) climaxes were great. A quick summary would be:1. We are told the boat sinks, in what we assume must be towards the end of the novel2. Main characters make their way towards said boat, immediately setting off ala...

Quite an effort considering this is a first novel. The problem here is the plot gets overly complicated and takes too many turns. Then there is the occasional line which refers to nothing previously and doesn't advance the story. But despite this it is very readable and the cast of characters has de...

3.5-3.75 starsAlthough I didn't come to love many or any one character in this tale, I thoroughly enjoyed the story, the world building, the creatures and Pazel's gift of languages. While epic in scope, I wasn't sickened by the political intrigue and appreciated the efforts of the counter conspirac...

Reviewed for the LA Times:The quest narrative is as old as storytelling and -- whether written, spoken or filmed -- is one of the most satisfying forms of entertainment. However, its popularity means it is incrementally more difficult to carry off with any convincing air of freshness and vitality. I...
