Hmm.... I think a B for narration, and a B- for story. The writing was beautiful and memorable, and I loved how Mariella's character evolved. However, the pacing was inconsistent and some of the childhood flashbacks during the middle of a war scene were pretty jarring while listening - but I might n...

August's book club. One of those books that a bit of a slow burner - took me several chapters of ploughing through to start to get into it. i've really gotten into historical fiction lately and was excited to read this book. the reviews were pretty high and yet i was bored reading it, the characters were annoying and Mariella was just plain frustrating. i didn't feel she developed as a character and the ending was unrewarding.

Without going off into spoilers, I have to say that the main thing that kept me from giving this book five stars was the ending. It left me saying "And then what happened," because it was so anticlimactic. The plot concerns Mariella Lingwood, a well-to-do and very proper Victorian English lady, who ...

The two cousins at the centre of this book could not be more dissimilar. Mariella is thoughtful, timid and conventional; her sights are set on marriage to Henry, a promising young doctor. Rosa is reckless, courageous and unconventional; she is determined to make a career for herself in medicine, des...
