Eloise Kelly is an American history student trying to find material for her dissertation in England. Enamoured of the dashing gentleman spies of the late 18th and early 19th Century, like the Scarlet Pimpernel and his successor the Purple Gentian, what Eloise really wants to do is unmask the identit...
I was surprised by many aspects of the book. First, the various romances and character types.woven throughout the novel. Willing does an amazing job of.creating believable and highly realistic characters. Second, I.was surprised by the humor and wit contained both in dialogue and Eloise's mind. This...
This is a very high 3 stars, but I can't quite justify giving it 4 stars. The ProsThe espionage provided a light fun adventure. I liked that it struck a balance between a hardcore thriller espionage and fluffy romance that made it enjoyable to read without being unbelievable. The side characters were...
Frothy & predictable. Mindless, easy, & frivolous enough as a beach or pool read if you're looking for that sort of thing. I guess it's considered historical romance. It's pretty lightweight as a historical fiction piece; not sure how it measures up as a romantic piece as I rarely read romances.
Overall an entertaining, very light read. I loved the characters of, and dynamics between, Richard's family. I found myself laughing out loud at some of their banter. There were a few things though that I didn't love. Specifically the boat scene on the Seine. What virginal young woman, raised in th...
For the first half of this book I simply could not put it down. The plot was interesting, fast paced and filled with intriguing characters. But right around the middle of the book Willig seems to have completely lost her focus. The once sensible and well rounded characters somehow turned into sex cr...

Read this for both a book club and the Colorful Challenge. Simply stated I didn't like this one. A combination of chick-lit (which I am not interested in at all) and romance, the book falls flat. The characters are not characters of their period. There are still moments I think of when I think of th...
LOVE this book - a fun romp into English & French spies in Napoleon's time, and the historian (Eloise) who's trying to prove that it wasn't just the gentlemen doing all the spying. Sometimes the back-and-forth between time periods seems to get in the way, but the story is worth it.
