Quoyle restait incapable de saisir l'actualité, n'avait aucun sens du détail. Il avait peur de tout, à l'exception d'une quinzaine de verbes. Avec un instinct fatal pour l'utilisation erronée du passif.
A Scottish-Canadian Blethering On About Books
"Outside, an hour later, Quoyle at his fire, the aunt taking things out of the food box; eggs, a crushed bag of bread, butter, jam. Sunshine crowded against the aunt, her hands following, seizing packets. The child unwrapped the butter, the aunt spread it with a piece of broken wood for a knife, sti...

Didn't like it. Didn't like the characters. Didn't like the pace of the plot. Thought the writing style was contrived.

Proulx is the author of the short story "Brokeback Mountain" which was made into the film of the same name. I read that short story soon after seeing the movie and remember finding it moving. So dark, depressing and bleak I could not get very far into this book. No matter how many times people told me it has a happy ending, my feeling is that it's not worth the slog.

3.75 starsI had a bit of a hard time getting into this book as the style is very different and lyrical. But after getting used to it, I was able to immerse myself in the story which was different than most everything I've read..Sad, depressing and optimistic all at the same time - and the back-drop o...
