In the first book in a series, Lawrence Block introduces readers to Matthew Shrudder, who does favours for his "friends" that no one else will: A brutal murder of a woman by her roommate, who is found raving covered in blood the middle of the street. This is an open and shut case as the roommate co...

"The Sins of the Father" is the first book in Lawrence Block's Matthew Scudder series and the first book that I have read by this author.Scudder is the definition of the cliched hardboiled detective. The mystery to which he has attached himself is not overly complex and it is not difficult to guess ...

For my full review, please visit Casual Debris. An integral element in the private investigator novel is the urban world in which he exists. With Matthew Scudder the reader is immediately immersed in the gritty urban landscape, one shaped not only by the violent and chaotic society that upholds it, b...

3.5. Solid start to what I've heard is a good series! Been planning on reading the Matthew Scudder books for years and now I've started. Matthew seems like a great character and I'm anxious to learn more about him. In detective and crime novels, I'm less interested in the actual mystery and more int...

If you're entering the world of Matthew Scudder, you better brace yourself for some dark and delicious detective work. I don't know why I keep wanting to use adjectives normally reserved for coffee blends to describe this book. I'm pretty sure evenly-roasted isn't a term intended for literary review...

This novel is of the kind that your eyes hit the page and before you know, it, you sit up blinking, having devoured the book in one setting. The style is clean and flows well enough to do that. I also admit I have a weakness for books set in my home town of New York City, so that was another plus fo...

Interesting read, Matt Scudder is an ex-cop who isn't a private detective but still does odd jobs for people for pay. Like the saint he gives 10% to charity but a lot of his stuff is a lot less nice. The twists are good too.

Matthew Scudder, a PI and former police officer, is hired by the estranged father of a murdered prostitute to find out what happened to her over the years. The police investigation was over as the suspect hanged himself and it was considered an open and shut case.Scudder is an interesting but extre...

Straightforward, clean and classic, The Sins was the perfect book for a lazy afternoon in the sun. Decent characterization, a serviceable investigation and the seedy side of 1970s New York all contribute to a fast read. The first book in a long-running series introduces Matthew Scudder, a 15 year vet...
