It's weird for me to dislike Christie books, but this one did nothing for me. It was a struggle to finish. I think the main issue was that I just found the why behind who murdered an eccentric and misogynistic man (Captain Trevelyan) to be boring due to one of the main character we follow through mo...

Between this and The Secret of Chimneys, I’m starting to get the impression that Christie was on a crusade to single-handedly take down the “policemen in detective novels are stupid” trope. Once again, we have a murder mystery where the police are competent and on top of things and aren’t completely...

I didn't quite finish this one before falling asleep last night, so I grabbed it and finished it this morning. This is one of Christie's true standalones - one of those books containing none of her recurring characters. No Poirot or Marple, but also no Colonel Race, no Inspector Japp or Ariadne Ol...

Not cricket, Dame Agatha! The story was enjoyable enough, but it was unsolvable by a reader because Agatha Christie withheld information until the denouement. She usually plays more fairly, and her stories are usually more cleverly spun!

What can I say? It's an early Agatha Christie novel, with spunky young people solving crimes instead of eccentric older people. The mystery and the guilty party were noticeably easier to guess than in her later novels, at least for meWarning: Contains racial slurs.

The audiobook is like a radio dramatization with different actors and sound effects included. It's different, but I'm enjoying it so far.I was halfway through the audiobook before I realized that I had read this a long time ago. The killer was a surprise to me at this time and I think will be a su...

A non-Poirot, non-Marple mystery. I remembered the solution, unfortunately, but enjoyed the way Christie handled the romance. [May 2011]
