The Spirit Thief was another random pick from the TBR. And it was a nice surprise. The magic systems is an interplay between the magicians and the spirits they bond with and obey them. It was quite original. The ploys were not overly intricate, but that can be nice for a change. It was a very easy r...

This book was seriously entertaining. There were several main characters and all were just as fascinating as the next. I cared for each equally- with the exception of Eli whose pertinent information I not only craved but was unfortunately doled out sparingly. Miranda-the Spiritualist- was strong yet...

I'm not a big fan of this book. It was okay, but never really grabbed me and I found it a struggle to finish reading. I didn't really like any one character more than others and Eli I found way too egotistical for my taste. I'm pretty sure I won't be reading any more of this series. 2-1/2 stars and ...

The Spirit Thief suffers a bit from first book in a series syndrome. While I enjoyed the characters, I didn't learn much about them. While I thought the magic system and world building was original and interesting, we never delve deep enough into it's history and origins. I ended up feeling like I...

I was hoping to really like this one; I enjoyed it, but it was a bit more stereotypically high fantasy than I was expecting and it never really wowed me. I do plan to read the next book or two, to see if the series as a whole delivers on the promise of what it could be.

I have to admit that the very first line made me laugh. "In the prison under the castle Allaze, in the dark mouldy cells where the greatest criminals in Mellinor spent the remainder of their lives counting rocks to stave off madness, Eli Monpress was trying to wake up a door." The author had my att...

Rachel Aaron's The Legend of Eli Monpress is a series that has repeatedly popped up on my recommendations lists in the past; I swear every few weeks I'll be browsing through suggestions on my online book stores or Goodreads pages as usual and this blue cover will show up, with the man's face on it f...

This book was full of quick banter, ridiculous situations, and memorable characters that give just enough seriousness to balance, but not detract, from the silliness. I liked the idea of everything, from stone to stream to dust devils, having spirits and that those spirits have needs, rights, and ar...

A quick fun read. It didn’t pull me in right away and there is no romance which I kind of missed, but I’m interested enough to keep reading the series. I love the idea behind the magic and the objects.
