It's so hard for me not to compare any retelling that even touches on swans (The Wild Swans, The Six Swans, doesn't matter) without comparing it to Daughter of the Forest, so I was really worried going in that I would unconsciously (or even consciously) be setting The Swan Kingdom up to fail. But it...

One of my favorite fairy tales is The Six Swans. When I first saw the Swan Kingdom a few years back I was really excited to see a retelling of The Wild Swans (you know, different name, but basically same story). It's too bad this book didn't live up to that excitement. I started the book, and it see...

3.25 out of 5Good, but not on the same level as her later novels. Clearly a debut, Marriott demonstrates a lot of the same skills (strong female character, unique magic, compelling storytelling) that she will continue to mature in her later work. A bit simplistic, a bit too easily resolved at the en...

However, while the writing skill is undeniable,...

A retelling of “The Seven Swans”! I liked Marriott’s take on it, and found the antagonist genuinely creepy. However, I sometimes felt a bit disoriented by the settings which seemed to shift just when I thought I’d figured out what was going on with them.

Originally posted on Debz BookshelfIt’s so difficult to find words to properly describe my love of Zoe Marriott. This book was absolutely stunning. It’s hard to find a single fault within these pages. The writing was gorgeous. I knew it would be, but I loved it much more than I ever thought I could’...

First off, I was tempted to just stick this in the rubbish shelf, so it is clear I wasn't all that fond of this story. Which is sad because I was really excited when I first cracked it open, eager for a retelling of one of my favorite fairytales ever: The Wild Swans. It has a number of variant title...
