Lo, these many years ago I read this. After seeing the TV series I decided to revisit the books. I remember borrowing them from the Libraries at the time but I only read so far before stopping, I think I just stopped caring and now that I'm revisiting I'm finding that I don't really care what happen...
I don't know if I'm just to old, but this was terrible. and boring. and badly written. and I love Tolkien so it's not just the endless descriptions. I'm actually sorry I picked this one up.

An entertaining read if a little wordier than I remember this from my first read back in the seventies. It was still worth the time spent listening and I am planning on listening to the rest of the first trilogy as time permits.4 Stars for a fun read and recommended for all fans of epic fantasy.

This was a fun book, but it seemed to pull a lot of elements that I had read in other books. We have the unlikely hero and his sidekick setting off on a quest given to them by a strange figure that seems mythical and extremely powerful. So powerful that many times throughout the story I wondered why...
3.5 stars. Certainly feels dated, but then it's a precursor to a lot of stuff that is derivative so reading it this late in the game is a bit unfair and hard to judge. I definitely see the LOTR influences throughout. And pacing was a bit long, especially in the first half. Didn't really feel like it...
