Meryl Streep did a tremendous job narrating as Mary in this historical fiction account of Mary as a widow recounting the stories of her son's life. This Mary does not believe her son is the son of God and, although the apostles are caring for her does not like them at all. It is generally the story ...

This is a literary novella that imagines Mary as a bitter older woman looking back on her life and on Jesus’s crucifixion. Biblical retellings are not my typical reading material, and I’m not sure why I chose this one. To someone not raised to revere Mary as a religious icon, Toibin’s portrayal of h...

So that was more or less as depressing as hell. However, I very much liked the voice of the character, both as written and as read by Meryl Streep , and I think it has some very interesting things to say about Redemptive Suffering and how it's BS. I'd rec it to anyone interested in theology, with th...

First of all, Meryl Streep. Even if I had not been already interested in this novel, finding out it's read by Meryl Streep? I'm in. And she was brilliant. The novel itself is a different side to the traditionally told story of the life of Jesus - what if the version passed down through history isn't ...

Having recently finished reading Great Lion of God, a novel about the apostle Paul, I'm a little surprised I so quickly jumped into another Biblical narrative of the early Christian church. But I've been knocking out these Man Booker Prize nominated books this year, and this one had come highly reco...

Liked this a lot, especially as it contains many of the arguments I used to have with Religious education teachers about certain miracles. Also, the depth of Mary's grief as well as her distrust and hatred of her son's 'followers' is stunningly portrayed. Easy to see why this made the Booker shortli...

I really appreciated a view of Mary that wasn't quite so... nice. Colm Toibin wrote her as a human, not a god.
