by Dashiell Hammett New York 1932, the last days of prohibition. Nick and Nora are a couple who spend much of their time in hotels and speakeasies drinking copious amounts of alcohol. I found them very shallow characters and the book very dialogue heavy. After a gruesome news story I'd rather no...

It isn´t a good sign for a book if the dog, who gets occasionally mentioned, is the best thing about the whole story. I loved Asta. And that´s about the only thing I liked about this book. Having read Raymond Chandler´s Farewell, my Lovely about a week ago, I can´t help to compare these two books....

In a stark time-marches-on fashion, this one is very much a politically incorrect book all around. Since I don't mind that, I was enjoying it, but at some point around a third in, Nora stopped participating in dialogues and got relegated to audience surrogate, and I wasn't having as much fun. I do...

Lost my review twice now so I'm ready to spit nails. I was happy to read the comments from those that did this buddy read. Other than that, if this is an example of Classic Noir, I don't think I'm going to be a fan. I didn't like anyone. The writing at times was hard to understand since it was wri...

[Aside: Dashiell Hammett's name has too many double letters. I think I got it right, but I had to check.] If that was Classic Noir, I think I'll pass on future offerings. Admittedly, I was expecting Nick and Nora Charles to indulge in lively, witty banter while maintaining an all-day happy hour. I...

Ugh. I did not really enjoy this at all. I didn't think the banter was witty, and the characters were shallow and insufferable. Seriously, there wasn't a single likeable character outside of the dog, Asta. Nick, especially, was a pompus ass, and I didn't see why Nora loved him, nor why every other f...

So, this one was a bit underwhelming, to be perfectly honest. I wanted to like it, with it's aura of louche 1930's glamour. Unfortunately, I basically disliked all of the characters except for Nick & Nora. I was especially uncomfortable with Dorry, who was depicted as a hormonally-driven drunken t...

... always an investigator. Nick thought he had left all that investigation stuff behind him but it keeps chasing him down and insisting he gets involved, sometimes at the wrong end of a gun. Oh man they put away a lot of booze. I remember this from the film (and now I want to watch it again) Th...

I'm glad I read this classic but have no desire to read anything else by the author. Although I was told that his other books aren't like The Thin Man in tone so maybe, someday, I'll be persuaded to try another. I didn't have any idea who did it - and honestly couldn't have - until the very end, w...
