If you haven't figured it out by now, my other passion besides books are movies. I watched Home which came out last year and starred (the voices of) Jim Parsons, Rihanna, and J. Lo. Imagine my surprise when I found out that it was based on a middle grade (I struggled over this designation) novel ent...
What Perry Nodelman Is Reading, and Has Read.
This is a version of some comments I made on a fascinating post about this novel that Debbie Reese put up on her blog American Indians in Children's Literature. The True Meaning of Smekday tells about eleven-year-old Gratuity's experiences as two different groups of aliens invade the earth. Rex do...

I am once again just delighted by the characters, imagination, and humor of a middle grade book. Others have written lovely reviews about how this one. I couldn't possibly sing it's praises better. So I will find something to complain about instead. I am once again disappointed in cover art for...

What a fun read this was! I laughed out loud several times. The characters are charming, well developed and highly entertaining. Being as the main character is an 11-year-old girl, I would say the target audience is within that age range. Don't let that put you off though, the material is plenty...

A very funny, often arch YA F&SF novel of alien invasion. Rex plays with typical expectations for both content and form, resulting in an enjoyable and sometimes surprising story. I enjoyed the ending, though it was a little too The Trouble with Tribbles to be completely excellent.

Listened to the audio book. I had a great time listening to this book, even though this isnt the type of book I would normally seek out to listen to. I was glad to hear the reader get so into the characters, and was able to really imagine Tip reading her paper to me, or JLo speaking.

3.5 stars. This story is fun, fun, fun, if you don't overthink it.(of course if you do overthink it, it's about war and race and misjudging others, which is heavy stuff) I mean it's about an eleven year old girl, who sets off on a cross-country trip to be reunited with her mother after an alien inv...

First Sentence:"It was moving day."I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of Adam Rex's upcoming book, and thought that before I delved into it that I would check out one of his previous books to see what his writing style was like. So after checking my library I decided upon reading The True Meaning ...

I read this book today.I woke up at 3am for no discernible reason, and after half an hour tossing and turning, I gave up and finished The Silver Chair. At 5, when it was apparent that I wasn't sleeping anytime soon, I picked up The True Meaning of Smekday. And it was brilliant. The True Meaning of Sme...
