If you are a city dweller, prepping for an emergency is probably not frequently on your mind. You might have a spare flashlight or two lying in a drawer somewhere, in case of a bad thunderstorm, but you probably aren't thinking days, weeks, or even months ahead. Unfortunately, prepping is often relegated to TV shows like Doomsday Preppers where “preppers” are painted as crazy or at the least, a fringe movement based in the wilderness that has no place in a bustling urban environment. This is untrue.
There are multiple reasons to be prepared for various types of disasters, and they are extremely relevant:
Major weather events (i.e. hurricanes, tornado's, tropical storms)
Economic disaster (resulting in riots)
Political upheaval (local or national)
Perhaps the most relevant reason to be prepared in a city is due to major weather events, like hurricanes or bad thunderstorms. Climate change has issued in an era of dangerous, unpredictable weather that does not discriminate based on geography. You are just as vulnerable in a city as you are on a farm or a coastal condo. Being prepared for power outages, flooding, and even drought is extremely wise for an 'urbanite'.
Economic disaster is not an abstract concept that we've only seen in apocalyptic movies; it is a reality that we have seen time and time again. Unemployment rates rise, bank accounts shrink, and soon, people are scrambling to figure out how to make ends meet. Having some know-how about saving resources is an invaluable skill. At the same time, you should also be ready for people attempting to take advantage of your preparing, possibly in a violent manner. It does not take much for people to become panicked and resort to stealing. Knowing how to protect yourself and your family is a crucial skill in case of economic downturn.
Another reason to prep is in case of political upheaval, on a local or even national scale. Even with all the instability that politics cause, it may be hard to imagine a time when chaos erupts, but no country is immune to massive change due to its political system. Governments shut down and go bankrupt and the streets break out in riots. This kind of chaos doesn't have to happen on a national scale to affect you and your family, so being prepared to protect yourself and replace the services you need is very important.
Prepping is often misconstrued as an activity of the paranoid or for those who choose to isolate themselves from society, but if recent years are any indication of the future, then unpredictable events are a real concern and any smart individual is going to be ready.
