I was not sold on the last volume of Walking Dead. I felt like Kirkman was writing brutality for the sake of being brutal, because he feels like we expect it at this point (which, fair enough, we do, or we should) or because he simply sees no other way forward. This volume is a bit of an improvement...

It felt as though this one at least ended on a hopeful note, but I've grown wary, since this series has a knack for kicking hope right in the teeth. I'm cautiously optimistic about reading the next volume.

Such a disappointment. Volume 18 was the weakest of The Walking Dead novels, by far. Negan is a ridiculously over-the-top villain, and the sooner Kirkman dispatches of him, the better.
