Paolo Bacigalupi, New York Times best-selling author and National Book Award finalist, dives once again into our uncertain future with his first thriller for adults since his multi-award-winning debut phenomenon The Windup Girl. In the American Southwest, Nevada, Arizona, and California skirmish for dwindling shares of the Colorado River. Into the fray steps Angel Velasquez, detective, leg breaker, assassin, and spy. A Las Vegas water knife, Angel "cuts" water for his boss, Catherine Case, ensuring that her lush, luxurious arcology developments can bloom in the desert, so the rich can stay wet while the poor get nothing but dust. When rumors of a game-changing water source surface in drought-ravaged Phoenix, Angel is sent to investigate. There he encounters Lucy Monroe, a hardened journalist with no love for Vegas and every reason to hate Angel, and Maria Villarosa, a young Texas refugee who survives by her wits and street smarts in a city that despises everything she represents. With bodies piling up, bullets flying, and Phoenix teetering on collapse, it seems like California is making a power play to monopolize the life-giving flow of a river. For Angel, Lucy, and Maria, time is running out, and their only hope for survival rests in each other's hands. But when water is more valuable than gold, alliances shift like sand, and the only thing for certain is that someone will have to bleed if anyone hopes to drink.

4.0 "The Water Knife" by Paolo Bacigalupi - original, brutal and disturbingly plausible
In 1986, Marc Reisner's "Cadillac Desert" predicted the disappearance of water in the American West. In March 2015 the UN World Water Development Report predicted a 40% shortfall of water globally by 2030, with he US badly affected. In May 2015, Paolo Bacigalupi brought to life the consequence...

So, I was thinking "The Water Knife: was not as complex [Read 'as good'] as "The Windup Girl", and as such not as good. Then I went back and read my comments (I would not call what I do a 'review') and saw I gave "The Windup Girl" three stars. And here I am. "The Water Knife" is straight forward t...

3.0 The Water Knife: A novel
Great premise, engaging delivery. At times a little overwritten, a little eye-rolling. Wouldn't surprise me if there's a screen treatment. I could even see a cable series.

5.0 THE ULTIMATE LIQUID ASSET
“If I could put my finger on the moment we genuinely f**ked ourselves, it was the moment we decided that data was something you could use words like believe or disbelieve around.” Massive Dust storms from abandoned farmland add to the misery of those left alive.Water is going to be more expensive th...

4.5 The Water Knife: Or cyberpunk goes eco-conscious
I entered into this book with absurdly high expectations. For one thing I have enjoyed Bacigalupi's other adult novels, as well as his teen book Shipbreaker. And then there is also the fact that I've met Paolo a few times now and find him an absolutely fantastic human being. In fact, I was lucky eno...
