I'm being generous in giving this a three star rating, mainly because the beginning of the story was actually rather good. Unfortunately, that doesn't last long. This story plays on every Fantasy trope out there. It spends too much time on graphic death scenes, and not nearly enough time on actual w...

For Azoth, survival is precarious. Something you never take for granted. As a guild rat, he's grown up in the slums, and learned to judge people quickly - and to take risks. Risks like apprenticing himself to Durzo Blint. But to be accepted, Azoth must turn his back on his old life and embrace a new ...

Blint: I AM THE BEST! Azoth: He is the best... After a long painful pause from reading, I have managed to finish this book yesterday. I liked and disliked it at the same time. I found it at the same time surprising and disappointing, exciting and mundane, elaborate and boring, twisted and appealing...

There's something to be said for a story that takes the expected tropes, and plays them straight, if it's done well. And thi...

Decent book. Most of the time it was 4 stars but it faltered in the final third part. Also I found some scenes incoherent. Overall good plot and characters but not polished enough to be truly enjoyable.

This isn't terrible, it's just not great. (Yes, I'm back to my whining about generic fantasy. But there's so much of it out there, guys! It's so much rarer to find the really good stuff. The recurring moaning is mostly a function of how much more fantasy I've been reading recently, thanks to the con...
