High King Uther has died, leaving his infant grandson as heir and his bastard son and gifted warlord Arthur as his protector in a country that has fallen into chaos, with threats from both within and without. Told in the first person from the flawed perspective of one of Arthur’s sworn soldiers, Der...
The Winter King is a retelling of King Arthur, but has a fair amount of differences from the classic Knights of the Round Table fables. The story takes place in Dark Ages Britain. Merlin has vanished. Arthur, the bastard son of Uther Pendragon, has been banished, and King Uther's legal son has died....
Enjoyed it. A lot going on, to be sure, but the battles were intense and it was certainly more greatness from Bernard Cornwell. Regardless of how "historical" this is, based on what little is known, Cornwell did a helluva job. Definitely check it out.
Rating: 5.5/5 Summary: The tale begins in Dark Age Britain, a land where Arthur has been banished and Merlin has disappeared, where a child-king sits unprotected on the throne, where religion vies with magic for the souls of the people. It is to this desperate land that Arthur returns, a man at once...
Set in what we can glean, historically, of the times just after the Romans left Britain, this is a refreshingly approach to Arthur. Realistic blokes in Dark Age warfare, where Merlin in these early mediaeval times is the approximation of a da Vinci in his Renaissance times. No magic, just inspirati...
TWK The Winter King is easy 5 stars for bringing this oft-told tale to us in a completely new (and I do mean new) way. WARNING! Do Not read this book if you like your Arthur legend gauzy, frilly, magicky and cheesy. All previous Arthurian tales pale in comparison to Mr. Cornwell’s version. All of th...
With all three books of this series, Cornwell manages to walk a masterful line here between historical realism and magical interplay. It's kinda left up to the reader just how 'magic' Merlin is, for example. No firebolts here. Just when you think its all trickery... theres a kinda suggestion of some...
I was pretty disappointed. If I'm going to read an Arthurian series, I want magic, mystery, Merlin and the works. I put it down after 100 pages. Good writing. Just not my cup of tea in this genre.
I'm not necessarily a fan of historical fiction, or of the Arthurian legend, but a friend recommended this to me and I ended up loving the book so much that I bought the entire series and have read it twice. It is the story of King Arthur, as told in the first person by his friend Derfel. It include...
