The death of her husband propelled her from romance to creative non-fiction. Stumbling Through the Dark is a memoir of her husband's battle with leukemia and their final year together. She has two grown children, a daughter, who remarked that it was strange to see her mom's real name on a book cover, and a son, the father of her granddaughter Gabriella, who is a pretty good writer herself.
