"Then they buried me alive in this vile shop."

Thérèse is stifled by her relationship with her aging aunt and pale, sickly, cousin-husband Camille. When Laurent, "tall and robust, with a florid complexion" arrives in the Raquin household, Thérèse starts an affair that has irrevocable consequences for them all.

Written in 1867, Émile Zola’s third novel, Thérèse Raquin, is set in the dank arcades of the passages of the Pont Neuf in Paris. Dealing with lust, adultery, murder and guilt, the publication of Thérèse Raquin established Zola as a writer unafraid to deal with the darker, animalistic side of human nature. Thérèse Raquin was a precursor to Zola’s famous Rougon-Macquart series of books, and features the naturalism for which he is particularly remembered.

Zugegeben, dieses Buch ist keine Sonntagsabendunterh...

0.0 Returning to classics would be the greatest teen rebellion
Way back in the late 20th century when I was a teenager and the genre fiction 'industry,' with its absurdly blood-soaked TV tie ins hadn't been invented, I (and many others my age) slumped on the sofa with the novels of DH Lawrence - yes, really- with EM Forster, Emile Zola and of course, a bit of ...

Therese Raquin is Madame Bovary on steroids. The young Zola was impressed by Bovary, and its influence is clear throughout Raquin - but he ratchets every aspect of the story up, for better and...well, really for worse; this isn't as good as Bovary.Mainly that's because Zola is no match at all for Fl...
