Tom has been in private practice for over 35 years. In the late 1970s and early 80s he worked at Carol Johnson and Associates and later with Peter Walker at the SWA Group in Boston. In the 80s he was a Senior Associate at Sasaki Associates managing large interdisciplinary projects including Corporate Headquarters for TRW and Frito-Lay, the Urban Streetscapes: Dallas Arts District and Princeton Forestall Village and University projects for Boston College and others. In the early 90s, Tom formed Burck Ryan Associates with Skip Burck and did numerous institutional, commercial and housing projects.In the late 90s Tom joined Hargreaves Associates and opened their Boston office. While there he developed the drawings for Louisville Waterfront Park, several key sections of the University of Cincinnati's campus, Crissy Field in San Francisco and Exploration Place in Wichita. For the last decade he has been a principal at Ryan Associates in Waltham, Massachusetts outside of Boston. Tom has built a practice that focuses on housing at numerous scales mostly in New England and consulting and collaboration with other Landscape Architects worldwide. In that consulting/collaboration role he has worked with Martha Schwartz on the Mesa Arts Center, the Doha Waterfront Masterplan Competition, and Fryston Village in the UK. He has also collaborated with Field Operations on the Highline, Freshkills and City Center in Las Vegas.Tom is currently an adjunct professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Design teaching courses in construction techniques and technology. In past he has taught at the University of Pennsylvania and SUNY at Syracuse as well as lectured at Temple, UVA, and RISD. He is a contributing author of Timesaver Standards for Landscape Architecture and numerous articles as well as the lead author of the recently published Detailing for Landscape Architects.
