I agree completely. She spent too much time setting up the story. Things really pick up once they get to London. I find myself reading "just one more chapter" into the wee hours of the night (after 10 PM!)

Now that I'm finished, I need to watch the film again. I think Emma Thompson's screenplay may have solved some of the problems we've been discussing. (And I'll be able to gawk at a young Kate Winslet.)
