I read that book and was sooooooo depressed by the reality of it. It was great. The style tripped me up a few times, but for the most part I found it fitting. I then saw the movie and after having read it, my wife wanted to watch it, but knowing her, I suggested otherwise. She agreed. :)
I really liked the Wool series by Hugh Howey. The series has spawned a lot of fan fiction too, some of which is pretty good. Also Yesterday's Gone by Sean Platt and David Wright. There is a really old series that I like a lot, but it is, unfortunately, out of print. The first book was Warrior by Donald E. McQuinn.
The Road was too much of a downer for me. I like a book that presents problems to the characters, who then have to figure out the rules of the game and how to win. World Made By Hand is like that.
