Well, Edward Gorey and Charles Addams are artits who made books as well as illustrations with that touch of dark and irony. Addams even married in a pet cementery, he just loved animals.

I think both books of Gaiman, are intended for a "young adult audience" but the way he describes the situation, the narrative of the stories as well the characters, give us an open world full of misteries and of course dark tones.
