Grease (1978)
Great songs, infectious vibe, and wonderfully raunchy.
The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946)
Much better than the Rafelson remake, and unusually faithful to the book. Terrific performances, evocative photography, and a story that won't quit. A noir classic.
Sunrise (1927)
Directed by F. W. Murnau (of Nosferatu fame), this is another great silent, about infidelity, love, and murder as a farmer is lured from his wife by an evil "Woman from the City." Includes one of the most giddily romantic sequences in any film of any time.
Meet Me in St. Louis (1944)
For my money, the best musical ever made. Lovely story, great songs, Judy Garland, and Tootie -- the gold-standard of child characters, dark and funny and perfectly realized by Margaret O'Brien.
