What are you favorite vampire books and stories? (I'm not very well read in this particular sub-genre, I'm afraid.) I'd throw Dracula and Carmilla in, maybe 'Salem's Lot (definitely when I first read it; not sure how it holds up). I saw Carrion Comfort on a list of vampire books; how's that one?
I love all things vampire. They are my favorite monster, and have been since I was a kid. However, I can't remember the last truly scary vampire book I read. I've read Dracula, of course, the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice (not scary of course), Salem's Lot (although, that was so long ago that I honestly can't remember much about it), and then a host of PNR vampire books. Something tells me PNR is not exactly your cup of tea, Stream. :P I would really like to read I Am Legend--I've seen the film, but have never read the books. Although, I couldn't quite tell if those were zombies or vampires, or an odd hybrid of both. I haven't read Carrion Comfort yet, but definitely want to.

Char, the ones you mentioned sound great. I'm going to add them to my list.

Char, I know you're a big McCammon fan. What about They Thirst?

I have Carrion Comfort around somewhere, so that's good to know. Haven't heard of the Malfi book.

As for the Necroscope series, you're certainly right about it being a strange twist on the whole vampire thing. To be honest, I've tried a couple times to read the first book, but haven't managed to get very far. It's one I keep thinking about going back, too, though -- although it's a bit daunting now with so many books in the series. Must be up to 10,000 pages by now!
Rachel, if you liked the movie (which one, by the way?) of I Am Legend, you should like the book. It's not one of my favorites (as Char already knows), but most people seem to agree it's pretty good.

I never read the Rice books -- and now you've kind of confirmed that choice. I mean, if they aren't scary -- and that's a given (you say, "of course"), then I probably wouldn't like them.

As for PNR...I did read one book in the genre some time ago; I can't even remember the title. It was...strange. For some reason, though, I wouldn't mind reading another one or two just to see. Can you recommend a few good ones? (I have the first Anita Blake book. Good or bad?)
Need help?
