*Listened to the audiobook last night. Mark Hamil read it and I was not impressed. His voice was at once gratingly annoying and absurdly monotone. That sucker gets a 1 star.

Illustrated - really beatiful.

Gorgeous illustrations help carry the shortcomings in the storytelling. There are other wittier, more engaging series out there about 3 children left to problem-solve on their own in a spooky old house, but Spiderwick is perfect for the pre-Lemony Snickett crowd. I've been meaning to read thes books for a while now and was a little surprised to find how low of a reading level it was. That is not to say that I didn't enjoy it I just did not expect it. It was a really nice book. I did have to feel a bit bad for the children and how their mother acted.

Excellent series! Holly Black is a gifted writer and I love how she incorporated the original fae lore of Celtic mythology into her works. She has clearly done her research and produced delightful tale. One of the best fantasy series out there.

I read the first 3, I think. Very imaginative, lively little series for kids.

This is a fun book. It combines a very old-fashioned children-in-the-country-discover-fairies premise, with a modern sensibility (marriage splitting up, anger issues) and with some elaborate world-building. More importantly for some, these books are lavishly illustrated. De Terlizzi's work isn't ...
