Won Book of the Year Adult Non-Fiction—2012 Indie Choice AwardsAmazon Best Book of the Month February 2011"Dubus relives, absent self-pity or blame, a life shaped by bouts of violence and flurries of tenderness."—Vanity FairAfter their parents divorced in the 1970s, Andre Dubus III and his three siblings grew up with their overworked mother in a depressed Massachusetts mill town saturated with drugs and everyday violence. Nearby, his father, an eminent author, taught on a college campus and took the kids out on Sundays. The clash between town and gown, between the hard drinking, drugging, and fighting of "townies" and the ambitions of students debating books and ideas, couldn’t have been more stark. In this unforgettable memoir, acclaimed novelist Dubus shows us how he escaped the cycle of violence and found empathy in channeling the stories of others—bridging, in the process, the rift between his father and himself.

If swear words and rape and drugs are going to put you off, well then maybe this isn't a book for you. But read on. It is also about a dysfunctional family. I don't like dysfunctional ...

I have had the opportunity to read several memoirs by published authors in the last month or two..all have been excellent including this one. I can't help but want to wrap my arms around this author as a teenage boy. This book is absolutely heart-breaking to me.

4.0 Townie
Andre Dubus III’s memoir is a striking memoir of an impoverished and violent youth on the streets of Haverhill, Massachusetts. It’s pronounced HAYvrill, which I know from my having explored the streets of nearby Lowell as a child. My father grew up in that parallel Massachusetts mill town and what I...
