Tamora Pierce has always been one of my favorite authors for her gift in telling the story of a strong young adult in a fun and magical universe. While her books often have a similar theme, with the main character fighting against a preconceived notion, Pierce is able to tell her tales in a way so t...

Another set in the Tortall world but a very different take on it. Enjoyed this one. Had an unconventional view of crows built into the story line. Is good to see the main character not as the one at the centre of a set of political events, but trying to protect those she cares about from the side.

12/2013 ** Still my absolute favorite of Pierce's books. An important work about the dangers of colonialization, set within the framework of a teen/young woman finding her life's passion. 9/3/12 ** Read it again...needed comfort food at the beginning of the school year. Something that I could pick...

I love Pierce's books, high fantasy young adult works featuring strong heroines. Aly is the daughter of the heroine who started it all, Alanna, from The Lioness Quartet. I liked her a lot more than her progenitor though, and prefer the two Trickster books to that early quartet or the Immortals with ...

Interesting next generational story from Tortall. Alanna's Daughter Alianne (Aly) becomes involved in the politics of the Copper Isles.

I generally love Tamora Pierce, but this series just didn't work for me. I never felt as attached to Aly as I have to some of her other protagonists.

Immensely political, with spies and intrigue, backstabbing and maneuvering at every turn - exhausting. Aly and Nawat, Ulasim, Chaol and Dove were all enjoyable characters. Pierce expands her world by exploring the Copper Isles, integrates her mythology and of course fans of Alanna and George will we...

2.5I really like all the other Tortall series so I was primed to enjoy this one. Have to say I was very put off by the supremely self-assured manner of the main character. Never a moment's uncertainty or self-doubt, or much introspection at all. Not a good quality in a YA book, or really any story...

AAARGH MUST READ NEXT BOOK NOW.I found this story harder to get into than the other Tortall books I've read. It seemed to take a long time to set up the plot, with not a lot happening in the meantime. But it got me in the end. I'm in love with Nawat Crow and with Dove Balitang (my theory is she's th...
