Brautigan's surreal writing style took some time for me to get used to and appreciate. After consulting some critical writing on 'Trout Fishing', however, it was a lot easier to deal with the abstract prose and I think I was able to grasp - partly, at least - the dark undercurrent of the book.
A bit difficult for me to get into. It needed a bit of time to get used to the writing and structure. Very interesting bits in it, though I think I lack the historical and sociological background of the America it talks about. If you like Beat Generation writing, this surely is worth checking out. Loved the sense of humor and absurdity in this collection of shorts that connect. If there'd been just a bit more joining, I think this could have told a more coherent story, but I realize that wasn't really the point of the book. Some of the passages are laugh-out-loud funny.
