I am a Professor of Philosophy at the U. of New Hampshire. As a child I had an interest in natural history, particularly butterflies and moths. I pursued this interest at Yale in Zoology and Chemistry courses. I also have had an interest in history since childhood. I went to grad school at U. of Texas, Austin, writing on the philosophy of social science, particularly issues raised by the Duhemian argument. I also pursued philosophy of natural science. As a teacher I started a first year philosophy of technology course in 1975. Topics pursued in this course led to both a text and an anthology on philosophy of technology. I have also been interested in feminism, Marxism, and indigenous science. I have long been an advocate of non-reductionism and holism in organismic biology, in social theory, and physics. My Holistic Inspirations book looks at non-atomistic approaches that have often in the last century been considered anti-scientific, but which played a positive role in physical science. Chinese, Renaissance hermetic, and German Romantic philosophies have all contributed to rise of field theory. i have also been concerned with the social bases of scientific theories and note how lower class and peasant movements indirectly contributed to the Taoist, hermetic, and romantic movements. I have been involved with the Sociobiology Debate and the more recent debates about evolutionary psychology, as well as the Science Wars concerning the validity of sociological and literary studies of science.
