I really enjoyed this book, especially the second part. I still don't understand Vassily's mother, her actions were so incongruous to the whole loving mother thing. Regardless a fun read was had. Oh, I also liked the original cover better.
Update: I finally read the book and it's marvelous. I loved it so much, I'm willing to accept that the man on the cover could be both Sei and Vassily. (Martinez is now on my list of favorite authors.) I liked the substance abuse angle and how it was handled even after everything was resolved. It was...

4.5 stars. A deceptively simple retelling of the Russian folktale Vassilia The Beautiful. I said "deceptive" because while on the surface it's a quick sex-change so that now Vassilia is Vassily, and old Russia is a futuristic space colony, it really is better than that. No cheap substitutions here. ...

A snippet of poetry haunted him, 'then bl...
4.5 starsI loved this story! I wasn’t so sure about reading it when I read the blurb, but I read a review that convinced me to give it a shot and boy, am I glad I did. This book had it all. Wonderful, memorable characters, a great plot, a happy ending, what’s not to like? My only complaint is that t...
I wanted this book to be longer. I wanted this book to be endless. It's such a strange and lovely blending of Russian folklore and futuristic fiction. It's a story about the eponymous Vassily, a shy composer who is recovering from a terrible accident, who ends up being maltreated by his stepfather. ...
