Dr. W. Andrew Terrill is a Research Professor of National Security Affairs at the Strategic Studies Institute (SSI) of the U.S. Army War College. Prior to his appointment to SSI in 2001, he served as a nuclear nonproliferation analyst for the International Assessments Division of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). In 1998-99, Dr. Terrill also served as a Visiting Professor at the U.S. Air War College on assignment from LLNL. He is a former faculty member at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, and has taught adjunct at a variety of other colleges and universities. Dr. Terrill is also a retired U.S. Army Reserve lieutenant colonel and Foreign Area Officer (Middle East/Africa). Dr. Terrill has published a number of monographs with SSI on Middle East security issues. Several of these studies have received widespread attention in U.S. government and media circles. Many of his monographs have been widely used throughout the U.S. military education system and other educational systems. Reports that he authored or co-authored have been required or recommended reading for courses at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, U.S Air Force Academy, U.S. Army War College, U.S. Air War College, U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, NATO’s Civilian Military Cooperation course, U.S. Joint Forces Staff College, U.S. Marine Corps Command and General Staff College, U.S Army’s Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC), and for instruction given in Iraq and to U.S. troops deploying to Iraq and elsewhere. His work has also been required or recommended reading at a variety of civilian universities and colleges. Dr. Terrill has also published articles in numerous academic journals on topics including nuclear proliferation, the South African arms industry, the Iran-Iraq War, Operation DESERT STORM, chemical weapons and ballistic missile proliferation, terrorism, Arab-Israeli military confrontations, Arab-Israeli diplomacy in Africa, mercenaries in Africa, and Middle Eastern commando operations. He has been widely quoted by the U.S. and international media and is also the author of a number of opinion articles, book reviews, and book review essays. Since 1994, Dr. Terrill has participated in the Middle Eastern Track 2 talks, which are part of the Middle East Peace Process. He further served as an expert advisor to the Iraq Study Group (“Baker-Hamilton Commission”) throughout its existence from March until December 2006. He holds a B.A. from California State Polytechnic University and an M.A. from the University of California, Riverside, both in Political Science. Dr Terrill also holds a Ph.D. in International Relations from Claremont Graduate University, Claremont, California.
